Get a new car, if you can

Get a new car, if you can. But if you can’t, start where you are with what you can get. There is nothing like the reliability of a new car with a warranty and – better yet, a maintenance plan.

I got my current car, a 2018 Toyota Corolla, six months ago, through a dealer who went out of his way to get me back into a vehicle when I had NO MONEY after my previous car was totaled in an accident and I spent a year without driving as a rideshare driver.

I did not have money to go buy a used car, I had to take the deal that was offered to me. But I will happily continue to acquire new cars as long as people like that dealer want to keep giving me the red carpet treatment.

Granted, I probably got this treatment because my husband and I own a house outright with no mortgage, but I still feel very fortunate to be driving my brand new car and appreciate the fact that not everyone HAS that opportunity.

I thank God that I was given this opportunity on a silver platter and I’m not going to screw it up now that I’m rebuilding my credit etc.

I had rented a car from a friend for a few months prior to this purchase, and during that time I drove for Postmates… but unfortunately that barely yielded a fraction of what ridesharing delivers. Furthermore, delivery requires that I must exit the car to pick up orders and take them – sometimes up flights of stairs – to the customer. When my COPD is at its worst, that activity could easily put me in the hospital.

When I got my car, I paid no money down, and they even folded the first insurance down payment into the loan so I could GET BACK TO EARNING instead of sitting home wishing I could.

I almost died in January from this year’s flu… and when I survived it, I told myself that this was going to be the year I say YES to every viable opportunity that presents itself to me. So far, it’s been the best year of my life, and if another dealer tells me next week I can trade in my six-month old sedan for a brand-new XL size vehicle, I will say YES again. And be appropriately grateful.

What do you drive, and what were the factors involved in making that selection? Tell me about it in the comments below!
