You get what you pay for, and with the cut-rate services you may have issues that can be avoided by sticking with the big names that have a good track record.
Domain name and hosting
Ordering your domain name(s) and hosting from the same company simplifies matters so you will only have one annual bill to remember instead of two.
I recommend Siteground for domain name acquisition and hosting. I used to recommend Godaddy as well, but in my experience Siteground gives you more for your money – they don’t nickel-and-dime you to death. My reason for doing so is that these two companies have stellar records for uptime and customer service. I have had varied experiences with other registrars and hosts, as well as clients whose sites were held hostage by unscrupulous website developers.
Maintain control of your assets
I believe that you should always hold all of your own assets, never farm out your domain name and hosting to a third party who may have incentive to withhold it from you at some point. Purchase your domain name in your own name or the name of your company, and do the same with your hosting. Do NOT let developers change that. Any that claim that they MUST transfer it to their own account are lying to you and do not deserve your business!
Set it up
Here are the easy steps you need to follow in order to have a simple blog up and online within hours:
- Purchase a domain name
- Purchase hosting – I prefer cpanel hosting as what I’m most comfortable and familiar with
- Find the part of your cpanel that allows you to set up WordPress, and follow the simple instructions to add a fresh, new WordPress Installation.
Don’t worry if it turns out badly. You can delete and reinstall multiple times until you’re happy with the results!
- Log in to the dashboard and do the following:
- Add a backup user and edit the primary user profile, this is the profile under which you will most often be posting. The backup user is so that you can access your site if, for whatever reason, you can’t get in using your original credentials.
- Under “settings” click on “general” and enter your site’s name (title) and tagline as well as an administrative email address (your own, if you don’t have a webmaster). It is also a good idea to edit the time zone, and I usually set the week to begin on Sunday rather than Monday because it aligns better with most hard-copy calendars that way.
There are numerous other things you can do at this point, but the basic setup is done. Now you can move on to adding plugins and/or a theme – or keep the default theme and write your first blog post!
